Tis' the Season for Networking

marlyn_blogger

Holiday luncheons, family dinners, work parties, neighborhood get-togethers and festive feasts! Tis the season for gatherings, so why not use them to your benefit? Networking opportunities are all around you during the busy holiday season.

After-hours business mixers are not the only avenues available for networking opportunities. As you attend holiday festivities, be sure to have your business cards in hand! That's right, take advantage of the family gatherings - chat with your relatives about what you do and how they can help your business. Give away a few business cards to each of your family members and ask if they would be so kind and pass them along.

Building a Climate of Trust

marlyn_kissner

By Marlyn Kissner, Executive V.P. of the GLVCC and Executive Director of the CCEDC

It's enjoyable and relaxing for many of us to meet up and hang out with friends after work or on the weekends. We find comfort in sharing stories, laughing and joking or discussing serious and sensitive matters among friends and family. There is a climate of trust that we have built over time that continues to grow throughout the years.

Just the same, it is important to build a climate of trust in your professional environment. I've seen and experience this first hand throughout my professional career path. People like to do businesses with people they know and trust; building relationships is the key to connecting with new clients. Be a good listener and ask a lot of questions as you get to know new acquaintances and be sure to follow up; do what you say your are gong to do! Most people love to share information about themselves and this will allow you to get to know them on a personal level. As you network with others, keep this in mind and use best practices to build trusting business relationships. Having this foundation of trust is where the referral plan comes in to play. As you get to know someone and trust their business practices, you will most likely refer future clients their way.

Explore, Discover & Support Small Town America

marlyn_blogger

The next time you head outside, take a minute to look around, take a deep breath of fresh air and be grateful for your surroundings. Carbon County has amazing things to offer. Have you explored, discovered and supported your local area?

When you walk outside, look up at the trees and remind yourself that you live in a beautiful area with stunning backdrops filled with outdoor activities to enjoy throughout the seasons. Whether it is biking, hiking, skiing, rafting, kayaking, hunting or fishing, just to name a few, enjoy the many activities we have to offer and spread the word to family and friends.  If outdoor activities aren't your thing, take in the arts and culture in the area. Visit all of our small towns and explore what each hast to offer. The Number 9 Mine in Lansford, the Harry Packer Mansion and Old Jail Museum in Jim Thorpe, Historical Society in Palmerton or the Butterfly Sanctuary as you head to Albrightsville.  Want to explore the talent of our local artists? Stop by the CCEDC office in Lehighton and enjoy original pieces displayed on every wall, purchase a piece you love!

Remember to take pride in your community and speak about it often and in a positive manner. When the opportunity surfaces and you have the chance to speak about your hometown, do so with excitement and pride; be a great ambassador! Take the time to volunteer for you community in some way, even if it's only an hour you can give. We have a number of non profit organizations in the area helping many local initiatives, explore your way to discovering an organization that peaks your passion, then give your support.

Hungry or thirsty? The talent that lies in our area is quite impressive when you take the time to explore. Patronize our local eateries offering outstanding bar food to upscale cuisine. Explore, discover and support our local restaurants and next time you eat out, thank the owner for setting up shop in our area.

Let's not forget to shop local. You've heard this time and time again as we promote our small local businesses in the area. If you need a gift or something for yourself, think local, think small business. Once again, explore and discover all that we have to offer to cover your shopping and service needs... and then support our local businesses to help strengthen and sustain the industry in our area.

With spring in the air and summer right around the corner, I challenge you to explore and discover five new places or activities in your own backyard; give your support and pass along your experience. As you do, please visit our facebook page @discovercarbonpa and share your experiences with us.
In closing, I'd like to thank all of our business owners, local residents and public officials for making our area a great place to live, work and play! It is an absolute honor to serve you.

The Three Gifts

534

From the Desk of Marlyn Kissner, CCEDC Executive Director

The holidays seem to remind us of the great people in our lives. We take special time to celebrate with family and friends, co-workers and colleagues. I love giving gifts and hand written cards with a big heartfelt "thank you"... to remind our members, sponsors, volunteers and partners of how grateful we are to have their support throughout the year. For many non-profits and not-for-profits, it is the board members, committee members and volunteers who are the incredible support system we all depend upon.

The following are three wonderful gifts that we receive throughout the year from the many people, who volunteer and support our efforts, for this, we thank you:

First, the gift of Time: Thank you to our many volunteers who give us countless hours of time assisting at our events, planning our programs, strategizing on future goals and attending committee meetings.

Second, the gift of Treasure: As a not for profit organization, we depend on sponsorships, memberships and partnerships to fund our programs, initiatives and the organization. Many thanks to our partners who continue to support our efforts that in turn support our businesses and communities throughout the county.Read More
